If you have sensitive skin and your skin turns red the moment you try a new product, stings when you cleanse or flares up for no apparent reason then the chances are one (or more) of these five common ingredients is a hidden culprit.
Even worse: they hide in products labelled “gentle”, “dermatologist-tested”, “for sensitive skin” and sometimes even “natural”.
Here are the top 5 offenders we permanently banned from our natural skincare and mineral makeup, and exactly why your reactive skin will thank you for avoiding them.
TOP 5 Product Ingredient Offenders
- Synthetic Fragrance / Parfum
This is the #1 cause of allergic contact dermatitis worldwide. The single word “fragrance” or “parfum” on an ingredient list can legally hide over 3,000 different chemicals and many of them known sensitisers, phthalates or hormone disruptors. Even “unscented” products can contain masking fragrances to cover chemical smells.
Better choice: Look for products that are either completely fragrance-free or naturally scented only with pure essential oils (and disclose them fully).
- Denatured Alcohol (Alcohol Denat., SD Alcohol, Isopropyl Alcohol)
Listed high up in countless toners, serums, and “light” moisturisers, denatured alcohol gives that quick-drying, matte feel, but comes at a huge cost. It strips your skin’s protective lipid barrier in seconds, causing immediate stinging, redness and long-term increased sensitivity.
Better choice: Fatty (non-drying) alcohols such as cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, or cetearyl alcohol. These are emollient and actually help lock in moisture.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
The harsh detergents responsible for the rich foam in many cleansers, shampoos, and even toothpastes. They dissolve the natural oils that keep your skin barrier intact, leading to dryness, tightness and irritation. SLES is marginally gentler but can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which is a suspected carcinogen.
Better choice: Plant-derived, gentle surfactants such as Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, or Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate. They clean effectively without stripping.
- Certain Synthetic Preservatives (Long-chain Parabens & Phenoxyethanol)
Parabens (especially propyl-, butyl-, and ethylparaben) can mimic oestrogen and trigger reactions in hormone-sensitive skin. Phenoxyethanol is marketed as “gentle” and “clean”, yet it’s one of the most common triggers for perioral dermatitis, rosacea flare-ups and even eyelid eczema.
Better choice: Modern clean preservatives like Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, benzyl alcohol paired with natural acids, or water-free balms and oils that need little or no preservation.
- Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, and Paraffinum Liquidum
These petroleum-derived ingredients create an artificial occlusive film that feels moisturising at first, but they don’t actually nourish the skin. Instead, they trap bacteria, sweat and dead skin cells underneath, often leading to milia, closed comedones and dullness.
Better choice: Plant-based oils and butters that closely mimic your skin’s natural sebum, such as jojoba oil, squalane (olive-derived), shea butter, rosehip and argan oil absorb beautifully and strengthen the barrier.
